As a newcomer to DeWitt five ago, Matousek spoke out publicly against the Coal Gasification Plant, helping to reject it and protect the character of the town. She subsequently supported an update of zoning regulations, in order to prevent construction of industrial sites in residential areas.

Most recently, Matousek took action on concerns regarding noxious odors stemming from the airport and blanketing parts of East Syracuse. After she called attention to the 10-year-old problem, Supervisor Ed Michelenko was able to resolve it.

I thrive on public service. My entire career has been spent in working with people to improve the quality of their lives, whether it’s at work, at home, or in their communities.

Sylvia Matousek lives in East Syracuse, in the northern part of the Town of DeWitt. She and her husband, Vince Ciccarino, a retired ESM music teacher, have three adult children and four grandchildren.

Matousek began her career as an elementary school teacher in the North Syracuse Central School District, and was a resident of that district for over 30 years, prior to moving to DeWitt. She has been president of the North Syracuse Education Association, an elected position, since l973.

In honor of her abilities, Matousek received leadership awards from the Onondaga County Teachers Association, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and the American Federal of Teachers. She has long been associated with NYSUT, serving on the Board of Directors, as well as the Executive Committee.

Sylvia Matousek has been an active participant in local and state government all of her adult life, having worked in the campaigns of most of our current elected officials. She is widely recognized as an advocate for education, teachers and labor.

If elected, Sylvia Matousek will ensure that information concerning DeWitt government reaches constituents via new avenues of communication, including Facebook and e-mail.

Clearly, our town vision must incorporate green technologies, reclamation of vacant industrial properties for useful purposes, a long-term water management plan, and zoning regulations which support both residential and business sectors. We must provide the best quality of life for our residents at the most reasonable cost.
